About International Zoo Yearbooks

The International Zoo Yearbook (IZY) was launched in 1960 by the Zoological Society of London and is an international forum for the exchange of information on the role of zoos in the conservation of biodiversity, species and habitats. Investigative and data-collection work into the biology and behaviour of wild animals is increasingly dependent on co-ordinated effort and shared results between all institutions engaged in the study and preservation of wildlife.

The IZY is an indispensable publication for everyone interested in the biology, behavior, care and conservation of wild animals. It is the authoritative record for the zoo world and the source of much zoological data unobtainable elsewhere. Information is presented in the form of notes, detailed reference lists and surveys. Subjects covered in the yearbook include animal reproduction, behavior, conservation, new veterinary research, aquarium management and zoo architecture. Through the Yearbook zoo people, zoologists, conservationalists, veterinarians and anyone concerned with wild animals can keep up to date with new developments in the zoo world.

Each Yearbook contains several pages of photos along with many graphs, charts, and illustrations, and is divided into three sections. The first section consists of information, notes and articles regarding the books special subject. The second section contains new developments in the zoo world with regards to: architecture & construction, breeding, hand-rearing, conservation, education, husbandry, research & zoos. And the third section is a complete reference section with information such as: species bred at zoos, bird parks, aquaria and primate research colonies, directory of zoos of the world, an annual census of rare animals, rare mammal studbooks, zoo associations and federations of the world, and a subject index.
